Similar to improving your website’s ranking through SEO, there are things you can do both on your business listing and outside of it to boost your ranking. First, though, you need to make sure your business is listed on Google Maps and that you’ve claimed it. We’ll explain how to do that next.

1. Add your business to Google Maps

To improve your ranking on Google Maps, your business needs to be listed there. If it’s already listed, you can skip this part. If you’re unsure or don’t have a listing, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Google.com/maps or open the Google Maps app on your phone and search for your business name.
  2. If your business shows up with a location, then it’s already listed. Move on to the next section.
  3. If your business name doesn’t appear, you’ll see an option to “add a missing place.” Click on it and enter your business name, category, and location.

Important: Anyone can add a business to Google Maps, so even if you haven’t, check to see if it’s already there. The person who adds your business doesn’t control the listing. Only the person who proves they own the business can manage the listing, which is what we’ll cover next.

2. Claim your Google Maps business listing

Once your business is listed, you need to claim it. Claiming allows you to provide more details about your business, which helps improve its ranking on Google Maps. Plus, you won’t be able to complete other steps without claiming your listing.

To add more details, log in to your Google My Business account. You’ll see a dashboard with different options on the side. Click on the “Info” tab, where you can update things like your business name, category, address, service area (if relevant), opening hours, contact info, website, products, services, and description.

Here are some tips to help you improve your Google Maps ranking by updating these sections of your Google My Business account:

Google Maps shows businesses it trusts, and one way it decides trust is by checking if your business information is consistent across the internet. For example, if your business is called “North Shore Wellness Centre,” make sure it’s written exactly like that on your Google My Business profile and not slightly different, like “N. Shore Wellness Centre” or “North Shore Wellness Ctr.” This name should match everywhere—on your website, Yelp, Facebook, and more. The same rule applies to your address.

Use a local phone number Google doesn’t like toll-free numbers (like 1800 or 1300) because they’re often used for spam. It’s better to use a local phone number with your area’s code. This will help you rank higher on Google Maps and show people your business is actually in that area.

Include both your main and tracked numbers If you use call tracking, list your tracked number as your main business number, and your regular number as a secondary contact. This way, most calls will come through the tracked line so you can monitor how well your listing is working. Keeping the main number in your listing also helps Google match it with your website and other places where your business is listed.

(During the pandemic, it also showed if a business was temporarily closed, which made it an important online strategy at the time.)
